Shelby Community Life Skills is a day program serving 43 consumers each day. All individuals are developmentally disabled with medical and/or physical challenges. Staff are trained to work with each consumer on an individual basis seeking to meet the needs and desires of each person. Through this “person centered process”, the staff incorporate gentle teaching strategies while carrying out activities chosen by the consumers as they seek to increase independence, socialization, and communication skills. Those served are also offered the opportunity to go out in the community to reinforce skills learned at the facility as well as improve community awareness and safety skills.
Shelby Community Life Skills was developed in 2000 when the original Macomb Community Life Skills was divided to form two smaller workshops. At that time the part of the program remaining in Shelby Township became known as Shelby Community Life Skills and moved to a new location on West Star Drive serving 36 individuals. The program further grew and developed in that facility for eleven years and in 2011 the program moved to its current location on Wing Drive.
