Starting Point opened its doors on June 18, 2007, but there was much time and effort that went into getting the doors open. This is a history of Starting Point and homage to the parents who had a vision for their children and followed this process to its successful end.
Starting Point began as a vision, a need recognized by parents whose children were exiting the school system. These parents were becoming frantic about what their children could do in order to have a meaningful day. They began to meet after work in each other’s living rooms to discuss what they could do to develop a program which would ensure the atmosphere and activities they desired for their loved ones. When speaking of this type of program, the catch phrase they used was “meaningful community”.
The visions for this program were so intense in the parents mind that they formed a support group that worked very closely with MORC, as well as the Life Skills Centers, Inc. Executive Director, Mr. Dale Wagner. Starting Point opened with 7 consumers. By the end of the first year the year the number of consumers had doubled.
Starting Point consumers interact with their community through a multitude of volunteer sites that include Animal Welfare Society, OPC (Older Persons Commission) Rochester Public Library, First Congressional Church, St. Luke’s Church, Meals on Wheels, and The Michigan Humane Society, and several others.
From the parents and Caregivers, to the staff that serve the needs of those who attend, Starting Point is a warm and wonderful place to go where everyone has friends and there is a spirit of love and kindness. It’s a very nice feeling to know when our folks leave here at the end of the day, their day was meaningful, as well as fun and geared to their individual needs. Starting Point strives for choice based meaningful community experiences, with lasting friendships.
